What is Homecoming? In many schools Homecoming represents a period of time when the school has a week of celebration. The homecoming week may include an important football game, the election of a King and a Queen, a homecoming parade, rallies and even various dress up events such as pajama day. But what does that have to do with the term Homecoming?
Homecoming week originally was about inviting the school’s alunmi to come home, that is return to the school for a visit. The various activities, such as the parade or the important football game, were staged to entertain and impress the alumni. Somewhere along the way, the return of the alumni to the school became less important or was even forgotten. In most cases, the week has become simply an opportunity for the students of the school to have a celebration, with or without the alumni coming back. This is a pity because many schools could do with more active ties to their alumni. So, the next time your school has a Homecoming week, consider bringing back the tradition of inviting the Alumni community to come back home.
